Planning for Women program receives grant money
The Financial Planning for Women program, developed
by Utah State University professor Jean Lown, has received
a $25,000 grant from the Certified Financial Planner
Board of Standards.
"Receiving this grant means Financial Planning
for Women is recognized nationally as one of the nation's
most effective and creative community financial education
programs," Lown said.
The grant money will help improve and expand the program's
Web site, increase advertising and promotion and enhance
the presentations and content.
The program gives Lown an opportunity to educate people
about something she feels strongly about.
"I enjoy teaching people, especially women, about
their financial futures because people need to think
about how they will support themselves later in life,"
Lown said. "The program gives me an opportunity
to motivate women to take charge of their financial
situation."
Financial Planning for Women is a free, monthly seminar
where women learn about personal finance and investing.
Lown developed the program nine years ago as a service
to the community and as an opportunity for her family
finance students to gain experience in presenting educational
programs. All attendees receive a starter packet, including
a financial checkup and several brochures and tools
to help them answer their financial questions.
"The program targets women because too many married
women assume their husbands will take care of all financial
needs for the rest of their lives," said Lown.
"Most of the topics discussed, however, do pertain
to couples and families so men are always welcome."
FPW is held the second Wednesday of each month and serves
women in northern Utah and southeastern Idaho. Financial
Planning for Women is the only program in the region
providing free, monthly financial planning education.
