September 26. 2005 | The Utah State hockey team suffered its first loss of the season, 10-2, to the Weber State Wildcats D1 team Friday night in Logan at the Eccles Ice Center.

The Wildcats had a 4-0 lead with 5:10 to play in the second period, but two goals by Aggies Brett Fryslie and Roberto Leo just before the end of the period gave the Aggies the hope of a totally different game.

Despite the encouraging end of the second period and the involvement of the crowd, the Aggies couldn't fill the gap during the third period. The Wildcats sent the Aggies back to the locker room with six more goals, by John Darby, Soldano [twice], Erik Million, Tristan Schwarz, and Joe Gabbert.

Aggie William Winsa said, "I think we had them so bad, we lost our head. . . . I am so mad, we can't play three periods -- two real good but not the third one. We can't stay focused. We lost our head. We are not missing anything. We just lost our head and stopped playing hockey in the third period."

Aggie Forward Leo said, "Second period, we came out and played good. But third period, I don't know we just fell apart. We wanted to come out and get that first goal, but we didn't do it, it would have been a totally different game."

The Wildcats started the game by putting a lot of pressure on the Aggies' goal. Aggie goalkeeper Adam Lain had some great saves.

Aggie coach Jerry Crossley said, "They came out much faster, stronger than we did, more aggressive. It was a horrible start from our part. We have got to work on better positioning, decision making.

"It was simply a mismatch," he added.

Aggie Robert Hashimoto said, "It was terrible. We messed up for some reasons."

The Wildcats scored for the first time when Ryley Patterson put the puck in the back of the net followed by Ian Soldano and Chris Smith, who added two goals to finish the first period with a 3-0 lead.

The Aggies were weakened by a 10-minute penalty. Aggie Jordan Francom had to leave the rink for cross-check and misconduct.

The Aggies were disappointed, but they also know that they have never been so close to beating Weber D1.

Hashimoto said they have started closing the gap.

"Next time we are going to meet them, it's going to be a closer game. It's going to be a fun game to watch," said Hashimoto.

The Aggies will play their next home game Friday against Weber D2. The puck drops at 8 p.m.
