Soccer team gets first win of season

By Jerome le Carrou

September 19, 2005 | The women's soccer team won its first game of the season Thursday, beating the Univrsity of San Francisco Dons, 3-1, at Bell Field in Logan.

The Aggies improved to 1-4-2 while the Dons fall to 1-6-0.

"It was nice to get a win today after we have been so close this year," said Aggies coach Heather Carins. "We had some very special performances today, especially by Lacey [Christenson] and Charity [Weston]."

The Aggies took the lead for good 30 seconds before halftime, when Weston beat Dons goalkeeper Katie Hodgson for the second time of the afternoon after a cross into midfield by Christenson.

"It was huge to get another one before halftime," Weston said.

The Aggies had to fight early in the game to come back, as the Dons had a goal three minutes after the first half kickoff. A cross from middle 18-yard to the box by Don Stephanie Gray arrived to Lindsea Swisher. Her shot on the right side beat Aggie keeper Kelli Allred.

Cairns said, "That was a legitimate goal -- they earned that, that was a great play."

But after eight minutes, Weston scored her first goal of the season to tie the Dons. Christenson's cross into middle field found the head of Jessica Darrow, whose header enabled Weston to be wide open. She shot on the left side and beat Hodgson.

Cairns said she was happy for Weston as she had been unlucky a couple of times since the beginning of the season. Cairns said it's good for her confidence building -- Weston had found the post couple of times, and was looking forward to score her first goal.

The Aggies had a couple of opportunities to score more goals before halftime. Weston passed the ball to Darrow, who dribbled and shot on the upper right side, but Hodgson had a great save.

After 19 minutes, Aggie Rachelle Dixon shot from middle 30-yard. Everyone thought the ball was in, but it flirted with the net on the wrong side of the goal.

During the first half, the Aggies outshout the Dons, 10-3.

The Aggies had to wait 25 minutes to get their first opportunity to score. Sierra Smith missed her shot as she was wide open against Dons keeper Hodgson. Aggie Dana Peart had also a great chance after 43 minutes of play in the second half. A 30-yard ball from Dixon on the right side found Peart alone in the box, but her shot on the left inside didn't beat Hodgson.

Hodgson had four saves during the game while the Aggies' Allred had three.

It was finally Christenson who scored the Aggies' third goal, after 82 minutes of play. She flipped the ball over Hodgson from out of the box to beat her.

Cairns said, "Lacey had a phenomenal game."

The Aggies outshout the Dons 23-10 during the game.

Cairns said, "We attacked, we defended, we did it with 11 players. That make your team faster when everyone is working together."
