Lewiston council passes three fee increases

By Seth Quillen

LEWISTON -- Water may be scarce in Lewiston this year, but there is no shortage of the green stuff -- money that is. Three motions were passed at the City Council meeting Wednesday to increase fees on water.

A $350 fee to put in sewers was added for two reasons, one because of pressure from the state for a proper sewage system, and two a sheer growing need. And as Jeff Hall sees it, there was no way around a fee that high.

"We cannot go into the hole when we do a water hook-up," said Hall.

The impact fee for building was also increased from $1,300 to $3,000; this is however a one-time impact fee, but also required is a $750 hook-up price. And council members realize the need.

"As much as I hate paying taxes myself, and raising them, it's a necessity," said Kelly Field.

Finally a parks and recreation impact fee of $1,317 was also added and was approved unanimously.

"I definitely think the parks can use that money," said Councilwoman Alyson Hall. The additional money will be used for additional water and related projects, allowing children to have a better place for activities. All the council members felt good about this increase.

"The parks fee I feel real comfortable with, it is not that much for your kids," said Councilwoman Cindy Johnson.
