Hyde
Park holds its 'Grassroots Convention'
By Jennifer Geisler
HYDE PARK -- Round up your friends and neighbors folks -- it's time
again for the nominating convention for city officials of Hyde Park.
This year there are three council positions open for election, according
to Mayor David Kooyman.
The current city council members are Allen Balls, Robert Balls, Reid
Elder, Gordon Bosworth and Charles Wheeler, according to city recorder
Marsha Hymas. The term is up for Bosworth, Elder and Wheeler. Council
members serve four year terms.
"I think it's great that the residents of Hyde Park are getting involved
and offering to serve their community," said Dee Child, chairman of
the Peoples Party.
"Hyde Park has two non-political parties," said Hymas. "The Peoples
Party and the Citizens Party are among the two.
"Because of its size, Hyde Park started at the bottom of the political
process and has let it grow from there, which is why we call it the
'Grassroots Convention'," said Hymas. "There are not any differences
between the two parties, they are non-political."
Mayor Kooyman opened the convention by announcing the chairmen of
both parties. Dee Child is the chairman of the Peoples Party and Steve
Seamons is the chairman of the Citizens Party.
The parties separated to decide on prospective nominees.
"A nominee must be a U.S. citizen at the time of nomination, be at
least 18-years-of-age, have been a resident for 12 consecutive months
and be a registered voter in Hyde Park City in order to qualify for
a nomination for city council," said Child.
Four nominations were made by the Peoples Party: Will Pitkin, Rodger
Clark, Mark Lynne and Jim Skidmore, said Hymas. Three nominations were
made by the Citizens Party: Paul Lamount, Reed Elder and Charles Wheeler.
"Both Wheeler and Elder are running for a second term on the council,"
Hymas said.
Pitkin, Clark and Skidmore received the most votes from the Peoples
Party, eliminating Mark Lynne as a nominee, said Child. Lamount, Elder
and Wheeler are the nominees for the Citizens Party.
"The elections for city council will be held Nov. 4," said Hymas.

The next city council meeting will be held Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in the
city office building, Hymas said. All residents are encouraged to attend
and participate and give their input about the ongoing changes happening
throughout the city.
