Cornish youth strive for Eagle Scout awards By
Justin Creech CORNISH -- Tuesday evening five young men were at Cornish Park ripping out the horseshoe pits. They were not being rowdy teenagers; they were working on Jason Dorius's Eagle Scout project. One of them, Spencer Maughan, said, "It makes me feel great, special and part of something important." Dorius's project entails removing the worn-down boards and sand that make up the horseshoe pit. There are two pits Dorius says need to be upgraded. I might put cement around [the pit] and border it with redwood about a foot high," he said. There are two horseshoe pits at the park, and Dorius said he originally planned to put in another set of pits next to the existing one. He said town officials told him to only upgrade the existing set because they don't get used very much as they are. Dorius says the project grew out of a request from resident Ralph Pitcher. "He likes playing horseshoes and asked me to do it," Dorius said. There are about 12 youths in town working to receive their Eagle Scout awards this year, Dorius said. A plaque in the Cornish LDS church shows there have been 22 people who have receive the award in the town since 1976.
