Airport expansion threatens S&S Power Sports By
Toby G. Hayes NORTH LOGAN -- Expansion of the Logan-Cache airport may force one North Logan business to "restructure." S & S Power Sports, a world leader in the manufacture of vertical thrill rides. may be forced to tear down its 180-foot tower constructed near the airport. The North Logan City Council decided Thursday to send S & S a letter advising them of a proposed zone change with the creation of an airport overlay zone. The new zone would impose a building restriction in a one-and-one-half-mile radius from the airports north-south runway, soon to be the state's second longest at 9,000 feet. The zone would cap current or future structures at 150 feet as part of an ongoing plan for expansion of the Logan-Cache airport. The ordinance has been proposed by Cache County but must be passed by the cities of Logan, North Logan, Hyde Park and Smithfield, which all lie within the radius zone. "I've received a lot of pressure from the county to get this passed," said Mayor Val Potter during Thursday's meeting. "I've received a lot of calls from the airport and pilots who are concerned about that tower." The tower is used by S & S to test various thrill rides. It is also in the flight pattern of the airport's short runway, said airport spokeswoman Sarah Ann Skanchy. "We understand the need for airport expansion...but I'm hoping they don't turn a blind eye to businesses," said S & S Vice President, Rich Allen. "If we're not permitted to (operate the tower) at our facility, then it adversely affects our business. It severely compromises our ability to market and sell our products." But implementation of such building restrictions is a necessity, says Jay Aguilar of the Cache Metropolitan Planning Organization. "It brings you into conformity with something that has existed for quite a long time at many airports," Aguilar said. "The [Federal Aviation Administration] will not fund airports if you do not conform."
