Aggies fall to Utes in fourth quarter By
Doug Layne As the Utah State Aggies took the field against the University of Utah Utes Saturday night, they knew their work was cut out for them. The Ags faced one of the top defensive teams in the nation in front of 30,757 fans, the fourth-largest crowd ever in Romney Stadium. Unfortunately, Utah State witnessed first-hand how good the Ute defense can be, and dropped their season opener, 23-3. The Aggies put up only 162 yards during the night, the smallest total offensive yards in a game in the Mick Dennehy era. "I give Utah a lot of credit on defense; they played really well," Utah State football Head Coach Mick Dennehy said. All-American receiver Kevin Curtis came up with less than 100 receiving yards during the night for the first time in his career. "They did a good job on containing and defending Kevin," Dennehy said. "Their defense was really good," Aggie quarterback José Fuentes said. Despite the Aggie offense being shut down during the night, the defense looked impressive at times. They only allowed the Utes to score seven points in the first three quarters of play, giving up a total of 447 yards during the night. Marty Johnson, who was injured in last year's contest, came up with 180 yards on the ground. "They got a great team," Johnson said. "You have to give Utah State credit. They came in here with a good game plan. Defensively they played really hard and they made some good plays," Utah Head Coach Ron McBride said. "The defense played their hearts out. We weren¹t able to help them out tonight," Curtis said. The game remained close up until the fourth quarter when the Utes began to pull away from the Aggies, as J.R. Peroulis ran the ball from 26 yards out.
