Providence agrees to help fund city sidewalk replacement and repair By
Lindsey Blau PROVIDENCE The City Council this week approved a policy where the city will pay half the cost of replacing and repairing damaged or aged sidewalks around town. The sidewalk replacement policy goes into effect Sept. 28. "Homeowners feel the policy will benefit them," said Councilman Joe Campbell. "It seemed to please everyone until we got up to the problem of the driveway. The city will share the cost of the sidewalks. If the homeowners want a driveway or an approach replacement, it is the responsibility of the homeowner." Those who request sidewalk replacement will be responsible for 50 percent of the estimated cost. The project should not exceed $1.40 per square foot. The Council will adjust the amount each year as needed if any conflict should arise. After evaluation of a proposed site, Public Works Director Dee Barnes will determine the status of the site. The proposal will have to be approved by the Council. A contract will be signed by all participants. If approved, the requested area will be marked with a red "X." "The policy runs on a first-come, first-approved basis each year, until the approved sidewalk fund is depleted," said Councilwoman Skarlet Bankhead. No other sidewalk work should be completed until the following year, unless additional funds are budgeted for this purpose. The Council said the city is not responsible for replacing sidewalks that have been replaced within the last five years, unless there is a safety concern. If the sidewalk is damaged due to unreasonable use, the party responsible for the damage will be responsible for the cost of repair.
