Richmond tweaks city employee manual By
Nicole R. Grubbs They decided city employees no longer need to differentiate between sick leave and vacation leave. All time off will now be lumped into a category called personal leave. Effective Jan. 1, 2002, a new city employee will be given 11 days of personal leave. After each year one additional day will be added until the employee reaches 25 days of leave. In addition, all city employees have 11 holidays off. Previously, employees got five days of sick leave and six days of vacation. Councilman Cordell Johnson thinks the time off that city employees have is more than enough. "I'd be doing cartwheels if my employer gave me that much time off." He added that this part of the manual is "more than fair." The new policy adds a provision that employees won't be able to carry over more than 240 hours of leave each year. "If they don't use it, they lose it," said Mayor Kip Panter. The new policy "will not take away any benefits from previous employees," said Councilman Allen Lundgreen. In the past city employees have also been given three days of leave for funerals. This will now be included in personal leave, said Councilman L.D. Bowcutt. Marlowe Atkinson, city manager, will make the alterations to the manual by the next council meeting and the changes will be voted on. The Council also received quarterly reports from city maintenance, the fire department, the emergency medical technicians and the city treasurer, Stacee Andrus.
