JCOM student Michael De la O dies in car crash

Details are hard to come by on Monday morning, but here is what we know so far, in a statement by JCOM Department Head Ted Pease:

"I grieve to inform you that one of our students, Michael De la O, was killed this weekend in a car crash coming home from Nevada. Mike was a journalism major, originally from New York, and had just started working in the JCOM office and as a newsroom lab monitor. He and a friend had driven to Las Vegas to see a boxing match. They were returning, Mike driving, when he apparently fell asleep. It was midafternoon Sunday. His friend was not badly injured and tried to get Mike out of the car after it had rolled several times. Mike was dead.

"These details are sketchy. We'll find out more. There will be a memorial service for him later this week.

"Michael De la O was a New Yorker who did three NYC internships last summer. He was one of this year's recipients of the John Morris Scholarship. He was smart, talented, a little bit mouthy and could be a pain in the butt. I liked him. He was fun to be around.

"The JCOM Department will do something to commemorate our friend. Stay tuned."
