River Heights rezones land near school for subdivision By
Anna Brunson RIVER HEIGHTS -- Despite concerns that news coverage of the East Coast terrorist attacks that morning may have stifled attendance at a public hearing, the River Heights City Council voted unanimously Sept. 11 to rezone property next to River Heights Elementary School. The property of Dan Weston and Bill Carson was rezoned from agricultural to R-1-8, which means that residences of 8,000 square feet may now be developed there. Weston plans to start a multiphased project for a subdivision. "I think it would be good for the community," said River Heights resident Alf White during the hearing. Weston also indicated that he had received positive feedback from the community. Although the meeting was held as planned, non-essential items on the agenda were tabled. The council also paused the meeting at 6:30 p.m. to listen to President Bush's address to the nation concerning the terrorist attacks. "Would we have had normal attendance, had this been a normal day?" asked City Councilman Mike Jablonski, planning and zoning administrator. After consultation with the mayor and council, Jablonski said, "The public hearing and vote will still be conducted, regardless of current events which may have affected attendance." Weston also asked for the council's and public's opinion about again rezoning part of the property to smaller lots and creating a community for older residents. The homes would have smaller yards, no basements, and residential restrictions. Jablonski cautioned Weston that public support may decrease if he rezoned to higher density lots. The issue will be considered by Weston and the planning and zoning committee during the coming weeks.
