Lewiston bugged by flies -- even at council meeting By
Jennifer Brennan LEWISTON -- Problems with flies and computers kept the City Council busy Wednesday in Lewiston. With regard to the flies, Cecille Hall, a longtime Lewiston resident, said, "They are terrible. I've lived here 28 years and never have seen them this bad. Richmond doesn't have them." Hall said she could not use her garage at all last week because of the excessive number of flies everywhere. There is speculation that the flies come from chicken manure, said Mayor Russell N. Hirst Jr. Councilman Jeff Hall said, "Even without chicken manure, it's been a bad fly year for the whole valley. We need to find out what's the matter and do something about it." Hirst said a UPS delivery man rang the doorbell of a home in Lewiston, and saw so many flies he thought there might be a dead body in the house. He followed his thought by calling the sheriff. What can Lewiston do to solve the problem? The question was a concern for 17 residents who attended the meeting. There are land-use laws called "confined animal operations," Hirst said. "If we stop the chicken manure coming in," Hirst said, then Lewiston will have to abide by tighter laws. Referring to a meeting two to three months ago regarding the fly problem, Hall said it was the most attendance Lewiston had in two years. He said both Utah State University and Bear River Health Department were working on the problem. "A large portion of the city is upset about this," said Councilman Kelly Field. A few minutes later, Field was swatting at a fly buzzing past his face. "It is a problem, so don't get the idea we're passing it over," Hirst said. The council also discussed rewiring buildings for faster Internet connections. The rewiring decision will have nothing to do with the safety of the computers, Hirst said. At issue was who will take on the rewiring project. Hirst said he will not be taking responsibility since he has been doing it for three years.
