Mendon approves plan for east side soccer field By
Hilary Ingoldsby MENDON --Residents got their wish Sept. 13 when a proposal for construction of a soccer field on the east side of town was accepted by the City Council. Linda Whitting, mother of two young soccer players, headed the efforts of parents and coaches who told the council that Mendon's facilities are too small for the growing soccer program. "Our oldest team has to play at the Wellsville field because there's not room here. We want to play in our hometown," Whitting said. Other coaches and parents agreed. "There were just 150 people in the park at the soccer game, that's how big this program is, and in the spring there's not even an available place to practice," Coach John Davidson said. About 220 kids participate in the competitive and recreational soccer program in Mendon, a city with a population under 1,000, Davidson said. After the decision was made to construct the soccer field in an empty field on the east side of town the only issue was maintenance. "The issue is how much do we build and how can we maintain it. We don't have the budget to hire people to mow it," Councilman Bruce Anderson said. Parents and coaches did not let this set them back. "As coaches we walk out there, and if it needs to be mowed we'll mow it," Coach Neil Jackson said. Fund-raisers, donations, an increase in soccer registration or a possible lease of the land to the District 7 Utah Youth Soccer League were all presented as ideas to solve the possible budgeting and maintenance problem. All council members and those in attendance agreed that work on the new soccer field would need to start almost immediately to be ready by spring. A decision to allow Logan to place recycling bins in Mendon was also made at the Thursday night meeting.
