Wellsville's country market's up for sale By
Melissa Dymock WELLSVILLE -- Walking through its front door is like walking a step back in time. The floors are wooden. They are neither glossed with varnish nor smooth with newness. They creak and groan with every step you take. The shelves are as old. They aren't metal but instead handmade wood. They are shallow and would never survive in a Walmart Super Center. Off to the left is a soda fountain. It is seemingly the most modern thing in the store. With its barstools and mirror, one can almost taste the ice cream sodas. The Wellsville Market radiates both a sense of uniqueness and a sense of coming home. The market is owned and operated by Arlan and Lee Brandt, but now they are selling it. "It's time for me to move on to someplace else," said Lee. Her daughter, Becky Brandt,18, said, "I'll miss the people. Everyone knows me as the girl from the market." Lee said she and her husband bought the market 10 years ago as a place for their six children to work. It has helped them a lot in their careers and taught them good marketing and people skills, she said. Lee said that now with Becky being the youngest there is no one left to work in the market. "The purpose for buying it has ceased," said Becky. The market is about 80 years old and hasn't changed much in that time. "We added the soda fountain and the deli but that's it," Lee said. The floor is the same floor that was there originally. Lee said the market is extremely convenient for Wellsville residents, saving them the long trip into town. While Lee said the market is expensive to buy, "Just do what we did, refinance your house and take a chance. It would be a shame for it to close." The Wellsville Market is on Main Street, across from the city park.
