War memorial honoring local veterans to be built in Richmond By

Grubbs RICHMOND While the country faced the possibility of another war, Richmond city's Veteran's Memorial Committee finalized plans to build a war memorial which has been discussed since May. Tuesday night, Richmond City Council met to add the finishing touches to plans for the war memorial, which will honor everyone from the city who has served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or the Air Force. The memorial will be funded by donations, said Boyd Lewis, city recorder. "The goal is $50,000," he said. "We have a couple thousand." The memorial also will be built in remembrance of any war Americans involved in the Vietnam War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Spanish American War. Val Lewis, the sculptor who has been selected for the project, gave an overview of what the finished memorial will look like. He said the memorial is going to be made from red cement. It will be molded into the shape of a pentagon. On each point of the figure will be a plaque representing a branch of the armed services. A star will be in centered in the sculpture. A pole will be placed in the center of the star. The pole will be aluminum and will hold the American flag. The star will have the names of seven veterans from Richmond who were killed in action. It will also bear the names of two soldiers from Richmond who became disabled, due to the fighting. The sculpture will be handicap accessible because the area surrounding it will be flat cement. The Council discussed making a ramp onto the sculpture, but decided it would be a liability for the city. "The ramp will attract skateboarders," said Council Member Leslie Erickson. Lewis presented a scale drawing of the sculpture to the Council. The sculpture will be 32 feet on each side. The plaques will each be 18 inches wide and will be slightly raised. The cement will be laid in October, a date that was decided on in a previous meeting when the sculpture was approved. The memorial will be located on the east side of the city office building at 6 W. Main St. Anyone interested in donating money to the memorial can deposit funds at the Wells Fargo Bank in Richmond, said Marlowe Atkinson, city manager. In other business, the Council unanimously approved a new automotive repair business proposal, discussed a proposal for new sidewalks, finalized plans for a city party to be held on Friday, Sept. 14 and approved an Eagle Scout project budget.
