USU athletic media relations
Behind the play of seniors Melissa Schoepf (Georgetown, Calif.) and Amy Crosbie (Visalia, Calif.), who rcorded 16 and 14 kills respectively, Utah State's volleyball team upset 10th-ranked Brigham Young at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Tuesday in three games by final scores of 15-13, 15-8, and 15-6. With the win, USU improved to 5-3 on the year, while BYU fell to 6-2. It is the first win for Utah State over BYU in volleyball since 1981, a span of 29 matches. "To beat that team (BYU) in three games is unbelievable," commented second-year head coach Tom Peterson. "I think the pace and quickness of our offense helped us a lot. Their blockers never seemed to get a feel for our hitters. We just did a great job in every category, especially the lack of service errors (6) this evening. We set some standards tonight with the way we played, we put it all together. We now know we are a good team and can beat good teams, we just have to focus in on the next game and not overlook anybody." Individually for Utah State, both Schoepf and Crosbie hit over .300 in the match, while junior Michelle Matheson (Moreno, Valley, Calif.) had a season-high seven blocks to go along with six kills. Schoepf paced the Aggies defensively as well, as she had a team-high nine digs, while Crosbie added eight. As a team, USU hit .260 in the match and held BYU to just a .158 percentage. The Aggies also had 13 more digs than BYU and outblocked the Cougars 11.5 to 7. Utah State will travel to Laramie, Wyo. for maches vs. Wyoming and Pittsburgh on Thursday and Friday.
