Soccer team can't convert opportunities, drops opener to UNLV

By USU athletic media relations

Utah State University's women's soccer team was shut out, 2-0, by UNLV in the season opener Thursday afternoon.

The Aggies dominated play throughout the first half, outshooting the Rebels, 8-2, yet could not capitalize on the opportunities. The half ended scoreless.

In the second half, USU began less aggressively and Nevada-Las Vegas took advantage. Sophomore Cosette Joffs scored the first goal during at 55:00 into the match. Then, junior Jessica Chavez scored six minutes later on a dead-center shot from 10 yards out.

"I think we came out flat in the second half," said USU head coach Stacey Enos. "We're disappointed because I thought we dominated the first half. We've had a problem getting numbers in the box, and today it came back to haunt us that we didn't put a goal in during the first half."

USU returns to action at 11 a.m. Monday at Tower Field, when it takes on Iowa in the final home game before the season's first road trip.
