Park signs on for 1200 East connecting road

October 30, 2006 | HYDE PARK -- Main Street may not
be the only option in the near future for those seeking
a direct route between Smithfield and Logan. Hyde Park
became the second city to approve an interlocal agreement
to extend 1200 East, Wednesday night.

Force calls for the constuction of the street through
Hyde Park and North Logan, connecting Smithfield and
Logan.
One of Hyde Park's council members' main safety concerns
for the street is the number of driveways that would
have access. This fear was put to rest by a representative
of the new Reeder Development, who said there are only
five driveways that will have access to 1200 East.
Hyde Park Mayor Dave Kooyman, who has been a part
of the task force for three years, said he sees many
advantages for the road construction. Aside from connecting
four cities with a second major road, it will reduce
traffic on smaller streets in Hyde Park including 400
East and 200 South.
"Interlocal agreements allow us to access funds and
bond as a group. It builds a sense of community," Kooyman
said.
Portions of the construction have already been completed.
Logan's section of 1200 East extends from 400 North
beyond 2200 North into North Logan city limits. North
Logan has purchased one house that is standing in the
way of the project. One of three segments in Hyde Park
has been completed and city officials plan on constructing
the second portion this winter, Kooyman said.
North Logan revised the current draft of the agreement
before approving it. Smithfield's and Logan's city councils
must approve the agreement before the completion of
the project can take place. A completion date has not
been projected. Kooyman expects it may take two more
years.
