Arena issues stir up dust in Wellsville

By Karina Fain

WELLSVILLE -- Residents living on 200 South voiced their concerns to the City Council Wednesday night about dust, noise, lights and traffic created by people using Wellsville's rodeo arena.

"The parking lots aren't paved, and there's a problem with people coming in and out of there all times of the night," Ron Pace said. "There are health issues."

Pace said the noise and lights keep him up at night and the dust makes it difficult to breathe and keep a clean house.

Pace said he is still trying to figure out how the arena ever got built.

"No one asked me if you could build it in my back yard," Pace said.

"We didn't have to, Ron," Mayor Ruth P. Maughan replied. "It's on city property. We won't get rid of the rodeo arena."

The arena, located at the base of the gravel pit at the west end of 200 South, was passed by the council in 1994 as a location for the Mt. Sterling Stampede, a celebration held on Labor Day weekend. It was built in 1996.

City 4-H club members use the arena for youth riding practice; roping clubs also rent the facility for practices and roping jackpots. Groups using the facility pay for the lights, as well as a rental fee.

Councilman Brad White told Pace he hadn't heard about the arena being a problem. White is in charge of recreation, and said he would talk to Evan Bankhead, director of the rodeo grounds, regarding the issues. He suggested that Bankhead could remind renters about the speed limit on the road.

Pace also voiced concerns about dust and loose gravel created by uncovered gravel trucks traveling down 200 South, and the possibility of children being hit by trucks exceeding the speed limit.

Maughan suggested the possibility of watering down the roads after each day of hauling. She also suggested that Pace call the Cache County Sheriff's Office and ask for a deputy to come and patrol the road. Pace said he had made several calls to the sheriff's office, but the sheriff's office "didn't care."

"We'll see that the sheriff starts to care" Maughan said. "Brad will make a call and I will make a call."
