Young entrepreneurs run pumpkin stand on honor system

NIBLEY -- A pumpkin stand in Nibley has seriously redefined the concept of young entrepreneurs: it's run by a 12-year-old, a 10-year-old, a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old (with a little help from mom and dad).

The pumpkin stand is allowing the Knight children to learn self reliance, says mother Trudy Knight. They have been selling pumpkins for the past four years and the kids get to deposit all of the money.

"It's just something we've done for the children," Trudy says. "They have learned a lot from it."

The Knights live on a property with a very high water table. They were thinking of a way to take advantage of the water, so they planted pumpkins and other squashes that did well in the soil and never had to be watered.

"It's cool to see how big the pumpkins get," 12-year-old Shalise Knight says.

Shalise says this year they grew a 70-lb. pumpkin. However, they couldn't bear to sell it,so it is sitting on their porch.

In order to plant a pumpkin, Shalise says they put a couple seeds in a hole at a time. "We use the seeds over and over again."

In order to haul the pumpkins, the Knights have a four wheeler that pulls a trailer. Shalise says they "use dad's truck, too" and that he lifts the heavy ones that they can't lift.

The stand is located on US165 at approximately 3300 South. However, the Knight family probably won't be there because theirs is a self-serve pumpkin stand. The pumpkins are priced according to size, so people come and pick one and then deposit the money into a box, Trudy says.

"If we were making our living off it, then we probably wouldn't do it this way," Trudy says. But, since it's for the kids, they trust that people will do the right thing and pay for the pumpkins. "If they don't, that's something they have to live with."

Pumpkin prices at the Knight's stand are $5 for large, $4 for semi-large, $3 for medium, $2 for semi-medium, $1 for small, and 50 cents for mini.
