Hyrum council discusses park in closed session By
Ashley Stolworthy HYRUM -- After regular business took place at the meeting Thursday, a closed session took place to discuss the City Council's intent to buy land for park use within city limits. "Because we have only talked to one owner, and not made an offer to the other, it was in the best interests of the owners to have a closed session," said Mayor Olson. "We want to get the best negotiating price with the city's money." There are various impact fees each homeowner and resident of Hyrum pays for with their property taxes. These funds, as well the prospective park impact fees which will be collected from new residents, will be used to buy the land. "These fees are $600 and will only be spent on the item they are collected for," said Olson. "As new growth occurs, existing taxpayers should not have to pay for new people." Although the location is not yet known, more information will be made available when the council contacts both potential sellers. In other business, Councilman Larry Gittins announced the success of the city's canvassing for library funds which took place Sept. 26. "All who participated had an enjoyable evening," said Gittins. "There were approximately 140 volunteers who raised around $7,000." He said about 9 percent of the homes were contacted, as well as pledges from 38 businesses around the city. Currently, the city has raised $125,000 in donation and pledges.
