Hundreds of third-graders get a taste of farm life By
Tiffany J. Erickson LOGAN -- Hundreds of third graders from grade schools all over the valley were invited to Cache County extension's annual Farm Field Day yesterday. Cache County 4-H agent Scott Williams and assistant Cheryl Empey worked as a team to put on this year's field day. "It is put on in conjunction with Ag week on campus," said Empey. "We mostly focused and taught about the agriculture industry here in Cache Valley." Empey said that around 700 third graders from seven middle schools were bused to the fairgrounds for the day, attending workshops on feed, beef, dairy, dairy products and bees. "The program is set up to reinforce core curriculum at a third grade level," said Empey. She said workshops went hand in hand with the Ag in the Classroom program, which teaches students about agriculture in the area. "The kids were excited to be able to apply the knowledge they had learned during school," Empey said. "We were able to provide hands on application of in school teaching." Empey said that the presenters they had this year, ranging from an auctioneer to a farmer with a sow, were successful in keeping the kids entertained and interested. "They were animated, fabulous people," Empey said. Along with the volunteers who presented, two local FFA chapters from Mountain Crest and Sky View high schools provided group leaders for the kids. Empey said the success of it was based off of a collective effort. "We were almost going to cancel because of the weather," said Empey. "From the comments we have received, it was appreciated that we didn't. Empey said she looks forward to next year's workshops. "It is a lot of fun to see kids open up and be excited to learn about this stuff," she said..
