Lewiston, egg company to form committee to address fly problem By
Jennifer Brennan LEWISTON -- "He's a thinker, a doer." "She's too emotional, not objective enough." City Council members Wednesday assessed nominations for an ad hoc committee to tackle the fly problems in Lewiston. Names were tossed around, but nothing was finalized. Mayor Russell N. Hirst Jr. had proposed the ad hoc committee in a letter to the general manager of Ritewood Inc., a local egg production company. "It is essential we talk to someone from Ritewood," said Councilman Jeff Hall. Council members decided the ad hoc committee would need two representatives from Ritewood, two people from City Council and two community members. "We want someone from the community who will be objective," Hall said. Hirst said, in paraphrasing the discussion, people who are picked need to be people who "won't get involved in an adversarial role." After their discussion, council members proceeded with the meeting agenda, scheduled in a 90-minute time span. Another item on the agenda included rewriting the water ordinance. Councilman Kelly Field talked about his experience attending a conference where water conservation was addressed. The council discussed the need to revise or change the water ordinance. People with gutters are in trouble because water is contaminated and they can't get rid of it, Field said. The council considered changing the water ordinance or a "revision of the old one," Hall said. "I move we revise the current ordinance to say "city utilities" instead of "water." Such a revision would allow the ordinance to apply to a broader range of issues, Field said. The City Council will tackle the issues at its next meeting, rescheduled
for 8 p.m. Nov. 20. The unusual day is because of Thanksgiving.
