Smithfield council sends apartment permit issue to planning commission By
Marie Griffin SMITHFIELD --Chad and Lynley Thompson, appealing the planning and zoning commission's denial of a conditional use permit to build apartments on their property at 270 E. 300 North, were sent back to the commission by the City Council last week. The Thompsons sought permission to build two fourplexes on the property. The land has been zoned for multiple family residences (RM) for the past eight years. The Thompsons feel this makes their case, but apprehensive residents disagree. At Wednesday's meeting Councilman David Buys said the public had "legitimate concerns." He said examples of these concerns were safety and a need for beautification -- such as planting trees instead. Thompson responded that he "did try to meet all the concerns they had." Recognizing the heated situation at hand, Buys moved to send the issue back to the planning and zoning commission. The rest of the Council seemed to like this idea, but Mrs. Marchand, a co-owner of the property, was hesitant at the thought of another showdown with the commission. Marchand said, "I do hope the Planning Commission will drive through the city and look at the same property I have." The council decided it was in the best interests of the city to send the issue back to planning and zoning. "I just think that's where it belongs," Councilman Jeffry Gittins said. The planning and zoning commission will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
