'Serendipity' for those who believe in the long odds of romance By
Julie Sulunga If you walk through life believing in fate, that there is a someone for everyone, Serendipity is the movie for you, and on top of that it stars the infamously romantic John Cusack. Serendipity is just one of those movies that makes you feel good. It has a storyline where everything seems impossible for two people to meet again who had a first encounter that lasted a night. They get on the elevator to see if they would end up on the same floor but, whether they pressed the same floor button or not, life has a way of getting in the way. A child that is 4 years old pressing all the buttons in elevator has a way of getting in the way. The first encounter between these Sara (Kate Beckinsale) and Jonathan (Cusack) happens in a Bloomingdale department store in New York City when they grasp for the same pair of mittens accidentally. That mistake pushes them to decide who gets the mittens and who doesn't. It then results in them having a dessert together at a cafe called, of course, Serendipity -- which is the finding of things that were never sought. Then they wind up ice-skating together and doing the elevator test of fate with each of them having a mitten. The only way they will end up together is if Sara finds Jonathan's phone number on a $5 bill and Jonathan finds the book that Sara has written her full name and number in -- a first edition. After four years of Jonathan always searching for the book in used bookstores and Sara always looking for the $5 bill, they are engaged. Engaged to people they are not happy with because they are always second-guessing what could have been. I guess when you believe in fate, anything even the impossible is bound to happen . . . or is it? The movie also stars John Corbett from Northern Exposure as Sara's fiance. In addition it has some funny people such as Eugene Levy as the annoyingly funny Bloomingsdale salesperson, and Molly Shannon from Saturday Night Live as Sara's best friend. Jonathan's best friend, Dean, is played by Jeremy Piven and his fiancee, Hally, is played by Bridget Moynahan. Peter Chelsom directs the movie.
