Enhancing learning, discovery, engagement top Hall's list for excellence at USU By
Steven Barfuss "This is not an inauguration, it is a report of our status," USU President Kermit Hall said, waving his finger with emphasis. Friday afternoon Hall gave his state of university address to an assembled crowd of students, faculty, and staff. The address was the climax of events marking the inaugural scholarship fund, which now stands at $700,000, Hall said. To address problems that have been plaguing Utah State University, Hall set forth seven goals that may chart the universityıs course. They are: 1.Enhancing the universityıs reputation for learning, discovery and engagement. 2.Enhancing recruitment, retention, graduation and placement of students. 3.Building an intellectual and demographically diverse and inclusive campus community. 4.Infusing new energy into graduate education. 5.Adopting a new business model that embraces accountability, responsiveness, and efficiency. 6.Fostering new partnerships, both internally and externally. 7.Launching a major capital campaign at the same time that we aggressively market a new vision for the university. "Take for instance our ranking in the U.S. News & World Reportıs annual survey of Americaıs Best Colleges and Universities.ı The report is out and Utah State is still in the third tier, where it has been for many years," Hall said. To improve this, USU must change its student- faculty ratio, he said. It currently is 23 to 1, and peer institutions' ratio is 17 to 1, Hall said. "Student success depends on faculty success," Hall said. USU has a secret weapon to help accomplish these goals -- the people of Utah, Hall said. "The benchmark tour has made clear to me that the people of Utah want to support us. We just need to give them the help to do so," said Hall. "Our common goal is to promote the academic excellence on which the future of our university is based; our collective duty is to make it stronger than ever before," said Hall. "As the candlelight vigil on the quad made clear, we have heart, we care, and we serve," Hall said.
