2001 football schedule takes Aggies across the country

By USU athletic media relations

Utah State University's first season as a football independent since 1977 will feature a demanding road schedule in 2001.

The exciting home schedule will include Wyoming, Oregon, Idaho State, Central Florida, and Weber State. Oregon and Central Florida will be making their first visists to Logan, while Wyoming will be coming here for the first time since 1977. Weber State last played at Logan in 1982, while Idaho State has played at Romney Stadium six times and will be making its seventh visit on Nov. 18 of this year.

USU's road schedule will be rigorous both on and off the field. Aggies will travel 15,408 miles on the season and will play in four different time zones. The Aggies will visit the northeast coast with a trip to Connecticut, stop in the southeast twice with visits to Lousiana State and South Florida and play on the West Coast with a game at Fresno State. USU will also play at instate schools Utah and Brigham Young.

While USU's last game in the eastern time zone was the 1999 opener at Georgia, surprisingly the Aggies last played the state of California in 1995 when USU played at San Jose State.

"Our schedule is a challenging one, not only in the quality of the opposition, but in the amount of travel that is involved," said USU head coach Mick Dennehy. "We are going to see a big portion of the country."

The Big West Conference will not sponsor football beyond the 2000 season after 32 years of competition. Utah State was involved with league since 1978 and won or shared the five league titles prior to 2000.

Ironically, five opponents are on USU's 2001 schedule that were on the schedule the last time the Aggies were independents back in 1977. That year USU faced Brigham Young, Utah, Weber State, Wyoming, and Idaho State as they will next season.
