USU students tutor kids in reading, math

By Dusty Decker

Everyone has a general idea of what Utah State University's Service Center consists of: Service.

But, how many students actually know what kind of programs exists within the center? One particular program allows students the opportunity to tutor children in elementary schools. This program renders service to Cache Valley and provides a link between students and the community.

There are more than 150 volunteers this year for the S.T.A.R. program. S.T.A.R. stands for Students Teaching Arithmetic and Reading. The volunteers are spread out through 14 schools in Cache Valley. They choose a time and school and then are assigned to assist a teacher with class at least one hour per week.

The program has existed at least seven years. This year Janalyn Hillam is the director of S.T.A.R. She is from Taylorsville, Utah, and is a senior, majoring in literary studies.

She said, "I like to be involved and to do things that will help me to meet new people here at USU."

She also said that she loves being over the program. Seven USU students also help Hillam as school directors. They oversee two schools each.

The program's mission statement is: To help children develop greater self-confidence and competent skills in reading and arithmetic through positive reinforcement. To foster an environment where volunteers will feel their importance and develop effective leadership skills.

Wednesday, Hillam conducted a meeting for students who were interested in the program. At that time students could sign up for a time and school and meet with their school director. The meeting was simple and efficient. The S.T.A.R. program can makes service easy and fun. Hillman explained that volunteers are not in the classrooms to run errands for teachers, but are there to help the children. She also told attendants that this should be fun and enjoyable, if not then they would see what needed to be changed.

The S.T.A.R. program has three goals

1- Be dependable and committed

2- Develop lifelong love for service and desire to better your environment

3- Focus on individual not the program

There are still schools and times available; S.T.A.R. plans a meeting for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the TSC Ballroom.

For more informaiton, you can go to the Service Center on the third floor of the Taggert Student Center. You can also e-mail Hillman at janahillam@cc.usu.edu.
