USU soccer succumbs to Weber State

By USU athletic media relations

For the first time in three years Utah State's women's soccer team lost to in-state rival Weber State by a score of 2-1 Tuesday afternoon. USU slides to 3-7 overall (1-0 in conference) and the Wildcats nabbed their first victory of the season, bringing them to 1-10-1 on the year.

"I think that we dominated them in the beginning but we just have to go for the kill," said head coach Stacey Enos. "The reason we lost is that we are too passive stepping to the ball and putting pressure on the ball. You can't be a step behind on this quick of a team, and I think that's what cost us the game."

The Aggies controlled the game in the first 25 minutes of play as senior Marnie Bartelson (Coupeville, Wash.) scored at the 5:34 mark for her fourth goal of the season. USU stayed in the lead for almost 20 minutes until WSU junior Shay Hansen scored off an assist from sophomore Eleshia Miltenberger in the 35th minute of play. Energized by it's last goal Weber State took control of the game and scored its second goal four minutes later. Freshman Deanna Petersen found the net and Miltenberger was again credited with the assist at 38:46.

The second half was a battle between both teams as each took eight shots at the net but neither could manage a score, leaving the Aggies with their second loss in as many games.

"Our midfield got popped and our forwards weren't helping out," said Enos. "We didn't come out with the intensity that we needed in the second half."

Utah State will have a 10-day break to rest and recoup before it resumes conference play at home against Cal State Fullerton at 3 p.m. Oct. 13.
