100th meeting with the 'U' brings a loss for the Aggies

By Doug Layne

After four games of disappointment, and looking anything but good, the Utah Utes came to Logan to face USU. Unfortunately, once the game started, the Utes started to look a lot better, winning 35-14 to spoil the Aggies' Homecoming.

The University of Utah struck first in the first quarter as Adam Tate took the ball in for the 1-yard carry and gave the Utes an early lead. Tate finished the game with three touchdowns, 133 yards and 32 carries. The Utes finished the game with 278 yards and ran the ball 59 times.

This game would mark their best performance on the season as the Utes were averaging 117.8 yards a game, 76th best in college football.

When the second half began the Aggies got the ball first and marched down the field. Jose Fuentes connected with Aaron Jones, who finished the game with 103 yards, as he caught the 45-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 14. Fuentes finished the game passing for 230 yards.

It looked like the Aggies regrouped at half time and where ready for the Utes. Unfortunately the Utah gridiron had other plans for the Aggies and nine plays later the Utes regained the lead for good as quarterback Darnell Arceneaux took the ball in from 2 yards for one of his two touchdowns on the day. The Utes just seemed to have an answer for everything that the Aggies threw at them and the more talented Utes knew just how to answer back.

"Obviously University of Utah is a good football team, very talented and they will win a lot of games," USU Coach Mick Dennehy said.

The game marked the 100th meeting between the two teams, which is the 13th oldest in rivalries in college football. The Aggies won the first meeting, but the Utes have dominated the rivalry as they lead it now with 68 victories.

Although the Utes came up with the 35-14 victory, the Aggies offense continues to improve as they continue to show signs of improvement moving the ball onto the red zone.

"We showed consistency moving into the red zone but we can't trade seven for three's," Dennehy said. "We need to keep on getting confidence by getting it into the red zone," senior wide receiver Aaron Jones said.

The Aggies are now down to their last non-conference game as they travel south to face a struggling BYU football team.
