North Logan discusses land purchase; library use by Hyde Park

By Brook Cox

NORTH LOGAN -- The City Council voted unanimously Oct. 7 to purchase five acres between 2300 and 2500 North, and 1900 and 2200 East.

This parcel is the first five acres of 52 acres of available land, and the council also voted to take the option to purchase the rest of the land later.

The land can only be used for parks, open space and a cemetery. The first parcel costs $81,503, which includes earnest money already paid, interest and financing costs. This first parcel will be paid for mostly by the city's land acquisition budget.

The council also discussed the issue of letting Hyde Park residents use the North Logan Library. The council plans to give the Hyde Park's council members a tour of the library on Oct. 26, prior to Hyde Park's council meeting.

The North Logan Council will present a proposal for Hyde Park's community to join the library. They plan to propose $110,000 a year for part ownership, and $68,000 a year if they just want use of the library. North Logan is willing to let Hyde Park residents use the library free until July 2000 if they are willing to commit their support, because Hyde Park cannot change its city budget until July.

The library's alarm system is not working yet, and the building has a spider problem, but council member Trent Wentz said they still plan to open Nov. 2. Whether to have a fee for a library card has not yet been decided, but council member Wayne Watkins said, "A library is not just for the wealthy," and most council members agreed.

The council also voted unanimously to allow city officials to put "No Parking" signs where they deem necessary, but the officials need to present to the council a criteria that they will use to be consistent throughout the city.

Also during the meeting Wal-Mart presented $1,000 to the North Logan Library and $2,000 to the North Logan Fire Department.
