Today's word on journalism

Career advice:

"Coleridge was a drug addict. Poe was an alcoholic. Marlowe was stabbed by a man whom he was treacherously trying to stab. Pope took money to keep a woman's name out of a satire, then wrote a piece so that she could still be recognized anyhow. Chatterton killed himself. Byron was accused of incest. Do you still want to be a writer -- and if so, why?"

River Heights hears happy audit news

By Brittany Strickland

November 14, 2007 | RIVER HEIGHTS -- "Things are looking good," said Diana Cannell, the auditor for River Heights.

After an overview of the city's accounts, Cannell said that the council spent approximately $30,000 more than their 2007 budget allowed for, due to the alterations of playground equipment. However, the city is currently worth $500,000 which is attributed to the addition of Ryan's Place Park.

For the fiscal year, Cannell was very pleased with the council's spending, telling them that, "I really enjoyed doing your audit."

In other business, the council:
-- told the results of the municipal elections. Mayor Bill Baker will return as mayor; 4-year council members will be Francine Davis, Robert Gines, and Blake Wright; and 2-year council members will be Doug Clausen and Kathryn Hadfield.
-- discussed future road sealing in 2008 which may cost the city between $8,000 and $10,000.
-- decided the annual Christmas party will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11, in the basement of the city office building.

The city council meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the city office building, 520 S. 500 East.
