Thanksgiving dinner still possible on a budget
By Riki Richards
November 13, 2007 | Many USU students will be traveling
home for Thanksgiving break to visit friends and family.
Many other USU students will be traveling home for Thanksgiving
so they can enjoy their first decent meal since the
last time they were at home.
For the unfortunate few who will be stuck in Logan
for the holiday, there is a way to beat the cold and
fill your stomach, so grab a friend and prepare yourself
for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on a budget. A
dinner for two people with lots of leftovers can be
made for $20 if you simply downsize.
Buying a package of turkey breasts will be more than
enough for two people, and they are about $10 at most
grocery stores. Most of the breasts also include a gravy
packet that can be heated on the stove. This part of
the meal should be purchased in advance because they
are frozen and take about a day in the refrigerator
to defrost.
Mashed potatoes are cheap and fairly easy to prepare.
Potatoes can be purchased at any grocery store and are
less than $1 per pound. One large potato is more than
enough to feed one person. Boxed mashed potatoes are
even easier to prepare, and they are usually about $1.50
per box. Since stuffing cannot be put inside the turkey
breasts, Stovetop is a good substitute. It is about
$1 a box and is very easy to prepare. Smaller cans of
cranberry sauce are available for about $1, and canned
vegetables are cheaper than fresh. Canned green beans
are about 75 cents.
Pumpkin pie is the cornerstone of any Thanksgiving
meal. It can be purchased at the grocery store for as
little as $4 up to $10. Whipped cream is also quite
inexpensive at $2 per can.
If this is still outside of the budget, Angie's Restaurant
is offering free Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m. until
2 p.m. on Thanksgiving day. Optional donations will
be accepted and all of the proceeds will go to the Cache
County Children’s Justice Center.
