Career advice:

"Coleridge was a drug addict. Poe was an alcoholic. Marlowe was stabbed by a man whom he was treacherously trying to stab. Pope took money to keep a woman's name out of a satire, then wrote a piece so that she could still be recognized anyhow. Chatterton killed himself. Byron was accused of incest. Do you still want to be a writer -- and if so, why?"

Mendon's revised general plan gets council's OK

By Cody Gochnour

November 12, 2007 | MENDON -- The City Council approved the most recent revision of the city's General Plan with a few last-minute changes.

The Council had a goal to have the plan approved by the end of the year and they met that goal Thursday at the body's final meeting of the year. Based on research conducted by Planning and Zoning Committee member Jason Wooden, the maximum grade allowable for building lots was set at 20 percent. The number of water tanks mentioned in the plan was increased and the decision was made to update the population estimate. A motion to approve the plan with the changes stated passed unanimously.

The council also heard from Phil Coulter and Mike Cox, who have applied for the vacancy left by Councilwoman Julie Gwilliam's resignation. An executive session followed the meeting for the council to discuss its recommendation.

Thursday night's meeting was the last for council members Leslie Larson, Allen Gardner and RoseAnn Brandley. Councilman Jon Hardman expressed thanks to them for their service. Results from Tuesday's election are still unofficial, as election officials are awaiting absentee ballots to determine a close race among write-in candidates.

In other business, the youth council reported their activities, including Christmas decoration, an upcoming dance and the recent formation of a junior youth council.
