Career advice:

"Coleridge was a drug addict. Poe was an alcoholic. Marlowe was stabbed by a man whom he was treacherously trying to stab. Pope took money to keep a woman's name out of a satire, then wrote a piece so that she could still be recognized anyhow. Chatterton killed himself. Byron was accused of incest. Do you still want to be a writer -- and if so, why?"

Council will check messy yard in River Heights

By Brittany Strickland

November 9, 2007 | RIVER HEIGHTS -- On Oct. 9, the River Heights City Council decided to send resident Dick Barnes a copy of their nuisance ordinance. They also sent him a letter explaining that he had 14 days to comply with the listed requests. It has been 29 days since that letter was issued.

Zoning Administrator Don Davis, as well as Mayor Bill Baker and Councilman Blake Wright, said this week they would investigate the situation. They will be deciding whether or not Barnes has responded to the requests issued by the council to clean up the piles of junk that are intruding on his neighbor, Marjean Melville's, property.

Also, he has been ordered to fix Melville's fence, which has been damaged by the mess. At this point, Melville said, "he cleaned up a little bit. He used a tractor to move the junk but it is still up against the fence. He hasn't done much."

According to the council, if Barnes does not comply with the demands more invasive actions, such as fines and small claims court, will be enforced.
