Today's word on journalism

Career advice:

"Coleridge was a drug addict. Poe was an alcoholic. Marlowe was stabbed by a man whom he was treacherously trying to stab. Pope took money to keep a woman's name out of a satire, then wrote a piece so that she could still be recognized anyhow. Chatterton killed himself. Byron was accused of incest. Do you still want to be a writer -- and if so, why?"

Gun crime lands man a year in jail

November 6, 2007 | LOGAN -- Monday in 1st District Court, Martin Ortiz Gonzalez was sentenced to 364 days in the Cache County Jail with the privilege of work release. Gonzalez had used a firearm as a threat, and prosecutor Maybell Romero felt that he was a danger to himself and to others. He is expected to report to the court at 6 p.m. Wednesday to begin his sentence.

Gonzalez has been attending the IOP program at the Bear River Health Department, he has disposed of his firearms, and has recently had an exemplary letter from his employer issued to the court.

When asked for any comments, Gonzalez said, "I would like to thank the court and my boss and I would like to apologize for all of the inconvenience."

The court will hold a review hearing at 1:30 p.m. May 5 to decide whether Gonzalez must remain in jail.
