Final Exam Week Edition 2: Ethnocentrism. . . .

"More powerful than all poetry,
More pervasive than all science,
More profound than all philosophy,
Are the letters of the alphabet,
Twenty-six pillars of strength,
Upon which our culture rests."

Rating the popcorn in my kitchen cupboard

By Megan C Tschida

November 29, 2006 | In my search of something to munch on I looked in my cupboard and found three brands of popcorn that I am going to review. The three kinds I reviewed are Orville Redenbacher's microwave Tender White, Kroger (a Smith's brand) microwave butter, and Great Value Yellow Popping Corn kernels. What I will be looking at in these three brands are Nutrition Facts (for one cup of popped corn): Calories, Total Fat, and Saturated Fat; the cost of the popcorn, the overall taste of the popcorn and the popping satisfaction whether it is made in the microwave or hot air popper. I will also rate the popcorn out of a total of 5 stars -- one meaning I could have gone without this food, and five meaning please give me more!

Orville Redenbacher's Tender White
This is a microwave popping brand, and is described on the box as a "Premium White Popcorn Blended with Butter and Sprinkled Salt."

-- Price per ounce: about 36 cents.
-- Calories: 40; Total Fat: 13g; Saturated Fat: 7g.
-- Taste: 5 stars. Has great texture and not too greasy.
-- Popping: Seemed to pop great in two-and-a-half minutes. Most all kernels popped.

Kroger's Microwave Butter Popcorn
Kroger's is a brand that comes out of Smith's Food and Drug Stores. It is microwave butter popcorn that is a cheaper brand on the shelves than any other microwave popcorn sold. It comes in a variety of packs and either butter or movie theater butter.

-- Price per ounce: 11 cents.
-- Calories: 35
-- Total Fat: 10g
-- Saturated Fat: 2.5g
-- Taste: 1 star. It was really greasy on my hands, and some had a lot of butter, whereas other pieces had none. Not to mention it tasted burnt.
-- Popping: I could not seem to pop it at the right time, it would burn every time. Only half of the kernels popped.

Great Value Yellow Popping Corn
This brand comes with the kernels and I used a hot air popper to pop the kernels. It did not take long and every popcorn piece was done just right.

-- Price per ounce: 6 cents -- Calories: 130
-- Total Fat: 1g
-- Saturated Fat: 0g
-- Taste: 4 (with the right amount of butter and salt) stars. Without adding butter and salt the popcorn was not great, but after it tasted great. It was pretty greasy after adding warm butter.
-- Popping: With a hot air popper it popped all but one kernel.

Looking over all the facts, price, and ratings I found the Great Value brand to be the best popcorn around. It is inexpensive, the nutrition facts are low if you don't count the butter, and it got a very high rating. The only downfall of this brand though is you can't just stick it in the microwave. But if you have oil and a pan you can cook it on the stove. Also, a great thing to try is White Popping Corn which gives it a little better taste.
