Final Exam Week Edition 2: Ethnocentrism. . . .

"More powerful than all poetry,
More pervasive than all science,
More profound than all philosophy,
Are the letters of the alphabet,
Twenty-six pillars of strength,
Upon which our culture rests."

Hyrum may consider selling Elite Hall, mayor says

By Ryan M. Monk

November 6, 2006 | HYRUM -- This city is losing money on Elite Hall.

If anyone wants it and would be willing to pay top dollar, "we would be glad to do business," said Mayor Dean Howard at Thursday's City Council meeting.

The hall, which hosts everything from family parties to USU swing dances, took in about $5,000 in rental fees but spent around three times that in "barebones maintenance," said City Administrator D. Brent Jensen.

"You look at our parks and our playgrounds and they cost us money but the people who use it are very appreciative," said the mayor. "We are tight on the budget and it's not going to be cheap to keep it in use, especially after the new library is built and running."

Howard recommended the question of what to do about the building be considered again at the next council meeting, Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hyrum Civic Center.
