Would you pay extra for newspapers without holiday ads?

"I would, any time of the year. . . . That's not what I'm paying for; it's just as gratuitous as the ads they now run in movie-houses or telemarketers using your fun to spin their tales. No wonder newspaper readership is down: Before you can read it, you have to weed it."

Annual USU Scribendi Creative Writing Contest announces call for submissions

Utah State University's department of English invites students across campus to enter their creative work in the annual Scribendi Creative Writing Contest.

"All students are welcome to participate, no matter their college or department," said Anne Shifrer, contest director. "While the deadline for submission is next February, we want students to start thinking now about possible topics and to start writing."

The deadline for final submission is Feb. 3, Shifrer said. Judging will then take place and winners will be notified in March.

Graduates and undergraduates compete separately in the following categories: poetry, short fiction and non-fiction essay.

ASUSU has supplied cash awards for each category, and winning entries will be published in a hard copy edition of Scribendi as well as online.

The Thad and Jenny Box Creative Writing Scholarship will also be awarded to one of the competitors in the contest.

For submission instructions and more information, go to the English department website and select Creative Writing Contest from the menu. You may also contact Anne Shifrer at annes@cc.usu.edu.
