Best tasting
Mexican food? Head for Costa Vida
By Sarah West
November 14, 2005 | I
love any kind of Mexican food I can get my hands on.
But with so many such restaurants to choose from in
Logan, it's nearly impossible to decide where to dine.
I chose to review three restaurants in Logan that are
easy on the wallet, keeping college students within
their budget, but tasty enough to make us shrink from
the freezer at the sight of those frozen burritos.
Café Rio
This chain restaurant favorite is
new to Logan, but the food's reputation precedes it.
The chicken burrito enchilada style was as I expected.
There were no surprises in the delicious mild sauce,
succulent shredded chicken, and rice. I was so full
from this hearty burrito that I took it home, and the
scrumptious leftovers provided me with lunch the next
day. Price: $6.90. Rating: 4 stars.
The pork burrito barbacoa enchilada
style was tasty and filling. The perfect amount of rice
and beans complimented this pork masterpiece. This huge
burrito was definitely worth the money and its leftovers
could easily be taken home for another meal. Price:
$6.90. Rating: 4 stars.
Café Sabor
Local restaurant Café Sabor put a
different spin on Mexican food. Included in the chicken
burrito supreme were rice, beans, tomatoes, and spicy
shredded chicken. A layer of melted cheese was on the
top, and guacamole and sour cream were on the side.
The guacamole was better than any guacamole I'd had
before. Perhaps it was the assortment of spices that
enhanced its flavor to almost perfection. I didn't expect
celery chunks in the burrito, but it was a tasty addition.
Price: $5.99. Rating: 4 stars.
The carne azada wasn't as spicy as
I would've liked, but it sure was appetizing. The remaining
rice and beans I didn't roll up in the tortilla with
the steak was good enough to eat plain. It could have
used some sour cream and another tortilla for the steak,
but overall it was a delicious meal. A plus to this
dining experience was the tortilla chips and super spicy
salsa included free with the meal. Price: $7.99 Rating:
3 12 stars.
Costa Vida
This chain restaurant is similar
to Café Rio with its menu choices and ambiance. The
Shredded Chicken Salad was humongous. The vinaigrette
salad dressing itself was mouth-watering but spread
across the greens and chicken made the dish heavenly.
Once I had eaten all the salad leaves, the remaining
beans, rice, and chicken were left on the tortilla.
I still had an ample amount of salad dressing left,
so my boyfriend attempted to roll it up like a burrito.
It tore, but he didn't give up and cut it up into a
casserole, to avoid wasting any of this savory entree.
Price: $5.95. Rating: 4 12 stars.
When they asked him what spiciness
of sauce he wanted on his Big Kahuna veggie burrito,
my boyfriend asked for the spiciest. It was not as spicy
as he would've liked, so to solve the problem, Costa
Vida offered a shelf of sauces sure to appease anyone's
spice-loving taste buds. He chose the Chilula sauce,
which made it extra spicy and flavorful.. The tortilla
was extra good because it was a little thicker than
a usual tortilla, and the vegetables tasted fresh out
of the garden. Price: $5.95. Rating: 4 stars.
The verdict is in, so next time you're
running low on cash and have a craving for some spicy
Mexican food, grab a friend and head to Costa Vida for
the best price and taste you can get in Logan.
