Today's word on journalism

Would you pay extra for newspapers without holiday ads?

"I would, any time of the year. . . . That's not what I'm paying for; it's just as gratuitous as the ads they now run in movie-houses or telemarketers using your fun to spin their tales. No wonder newspaper readership is down: Before you can read it, you have to weed it."

Morgan's the new Mendon mayor

By Marty Archibald

November 9, 2005 | MENDON -- What started out as a three-person race for mayor became a mere formality in the weeks leading up to the election. After Tuesday it is now official, Michael Morgan will be the next mayor.

One of the three candidates was eliminated after the primary elections held last month. Morgan and current Councilwoman Leslie Larson made it past the primaries and Councilman Allen Gardner was eliminated from the race.

A few weeks later Larson withdrew from the race due to family concerns. That left Morgan running unopposed and, as the favorite after the primaries, all but assured the winner.

Morgan has lived in Mendon for the most part of the past 22 years. He has been actively involved in the community for the majority of that time. Along with serving on the City Council, Morgan is currently the chair of the planning and zoning commission.

"I am very familiar with the issues facing our community and I want to help Mendon meet our current and future challenges," says Morgan. Some of the issues that Morgan says need to be addressed are: Water, new elementary school, planing for future growth and maintaining Mendon's unique personality

"My job as mayor will be to make sure that as we grow, we don't lose the essence of what makes Mendon unique," says Morgan.

Two council seats were also filled in Tuesday's election. Current Councilman Jon Hardman was re-elected for a second term. Julie Gwillians was also elected as a write-in candidate to replace Steve Sorenson.
