Logan neighbors air complaints at public hearing on accessory units

By Rachel R. Keoppel

LOGAN -- The Logan Municipal Council met Wednesday to discuss several topics that are concerns to the city. The public hearing on accessory dwelling units was the key topic of the night.

"The reason for accessory dwelling is to allow the owners to take care of indigent parents or children with disabilities," said Fred Duersch, a community member. "They would be able to remodel for that intent."

Many of the homes that are being made into accessory dwelling units are not being done for this reason, but to bring in renters to the homes. Community members gathered at the meeting to voice their concern about homes in their neighborhood being remodeled into duplexes.

"They build and move on and we're left with this junk in our neighborhoods," said Nancy Hansen, also a community member. "We just plead with you to keep our neighborhoods nice."

The original intent of the ordinance was for basements to be able to be converted into separate apartments, with the owners still dwelling in the residence. The reason for the owners staying in the residence is for maintenance and supervision purposes.

"Enforce what's already on the books," said Bonnie Hoff, a community member.

After the council had heard several different discussions on the matter they decided to adopt a new ordinance that would fix problems that were part of the old ordinance.

Aside from the accessory dwelling unit ordinance being discussed, they also talked about water revenue report and the high school football team making it to the playoffs.

"I was wondering if we could join together and make this Friday Logan High Football Team Day," said Mayor Doug Thompson. "We are going to be escorting them out of town with police cars and sirens."

After discussing the matter the council all voted in favor of making Friday Logan High Football Team Day.

The other topics that were on the agenda of the council meeting were the Willow Wood East Subdivision rezone, and the approval of several different grants throughout the community.
