Cover up those tummy rolls -- or hit the gym

By Holly Scott

When you're sitting in class and you can't pay attention to your professor's lecture because the person in front of you has jelly-like rolls hanging over their pants, that's when you want to beg President Hall to enforce the dress code.

Does Utah State even have a dress code? Would anyone abide by it if we did? What would happen to you if you didn't follow the code?

So what's the deal with people wearing clothes that come from their little sibling's closets, when they should be shopping at Lane Bryant? An unwanted, not to mention unsightly, view of your peers' corpulence is the last thing needed in class. It's hard enough to pay attention as it is.

The toddler section in stores is made for little children, not large adults. Yes, granted the clothes are cheaper (and we are living on a college student budget) but if it's too tight and you're having a hard time taking deep breaths when you wear it, then I think it might be a good idea to re-evaluate.

The first step would be to decide on the look you are going for. If it's the "too tight, too small, skimpy look" stick to the toddler section and you'll be just fine. If you're going for a classier "she looks nice" look then the big kid section is probably the way to go.

Now let's give these people who are wearing clothes that are simply just too small the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they are fully utilizing the excuse of being a poor college student and haven't had the money to buy new clothes since the seventh grade. Perhaps, a new revelation to them; there is probably some great sale out there that they can afford at least a new T-shirt or two. For that matter I am sure there may even be some willing to share a few dollars, if it helped people cover up.

Another idea is to just hit the gym a few times a week. You always hear doctors saying that you'll live a longer and healthier life if you get some type of cardiovascular activity at least three times a week. I don't think doctors went to school all those years to be wrong. So if you feel like your clothes are a little snug, yet you still want to wear them just hit the gym a few times a week, and hopefully those unwanted rolls will suddenly start to slide underneath your shirt and back into the band of your Lucky brand jeans.

Working out every now and then can't be all that bad. To be honest with you, I have actually learned to enjoy it. I now look forward to it because it is my time to spend doing something completely for myself. I can let my mind wander and forget about all the pressing tasks that are awaiting me. Not only will your clothes start to fit you better, but exercising also releases endorphins, and "endorphins make you happy" (as Reese Witherspoon put it in the movie Legally Blonde).

When following an exercise program you begin to feel healthier and have more energy, and it can make you happier. Who wouldn't want that?

Now let's be fair. Not everyone needs to cover up, but everyone could use a little exercise to keep him or her healthy. There are plenty of people out there that look good in their clothes whether they weigh 100 or 200 pounds.

These people have come to terms that spending a little more money for the adult clothes is better than looking like they barely squeezed into their little brother's shirt. Even though buying a smaller size shirt or pair of pants does make us feel better, it is not always the best idea. Some people are just lucky and were blessed with that great figure. However, most of us were not that fortunate.

Part of the solution to this skin-showing fest is to get people to feel comfortable with who they are. The media are constantly putting images of the perfect Barbie doll and muscle man figures into our heads, leading us to believe we have not had success in a physical world until we look like them. But guess what -- wearing the same size of clothes as Monica and Rachel from Friends is not the answer. I mean honestly, how many people are really a size 0 anyway?

So here's what we need to do to help ourselves and everyone else out: A) Buy clothes that really do fit us and that we can take full length breaths in when we wear them. B) Hit the gym a few times a week and remember, you'll look better and feel happier. C) Forget about what Monica and Rachel look like and start to feel good about what you look like.

So, while the rest of the people in this crazy world are waiting to get an appointment with Dr. Phil to teach them how to feel better about themselves, we will be several steps ahead of them because we simply just covered up and hit the gym!
