New county jail 'grows up' in three days

By Tiffany Erickson

It's not very often that people see a building erected in less than a week but the new Cache County Jail, two stories and 42 cells, went up in three days.

According to Lt. Von Williamson of the Cache County Sheriff's Office, the county ordered prefabricated jail cells from a corporation in Georgia for the housing pod areas of the jail.

Each unit has two double bed cells attached. They arrived last week on 14 rail cars. After they arrived a crane lifted the units, each of which weighs 30 tons, and placed them on a truck that took them to the construction site. There they were put together like building blocks, forming a two-story building.

Williamson said there are a number of advantages that accompany the prefab cells.

"We are going into a Cache Valley winter," he said. "If we were to build them in the cold we would have to have heating, protection and a lot more time. What would have taken three months to do, we did in three days."

Williamson said another big advantage to the prefab cells is money. On average, jail cells cost around $62,000 each. However the county was able to purchase these at about half that at $32,000. He said they were able to get a good deal not only because the cells were mass produced, but also because the company, Tindall Corp., already had them on hand.

"They had the cells in stock. We examined them and they turned out to be what we wanted," he said. "We really lucked out."

Williamson said that the project as a whole is coming along faster than expected.

He said that the county contracted with Sahara Construction, a company from Bountiful, which had experience in building a number of jails in the past.

"They are very experienced and very good at what they do," said Williamson. "They are fast and almost always finish on time. He expects the entire project to be finished in the spring of 2004.

The county broke ground for the facility on Oct. 17. It will be not only be a new jail but the jail administration offices as well.
