Wellsville Council approves license for dairy products plant By
Karina Fain WELLSVILLE -- The City Council unanimously approved a business license for Northern Utah Manufacturing LLC Wednesday night. The business is a 50/50 joint venture between Phillip Kenney and Associates of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Dairy Farmers of America, a national cooperative and manufacturer of dairy and food products, that is based in Kansas. Dave Bigelow of Paradise is the plant manager. The company will manufacture casein and milk protein products from dry milk and other dairy products. In a meeting Nov. 6, Bigelow told the council the business will employ 15 to 35 people and will initially operate a single eight-hour shift per day, with the possibility of increased hours of operation in the future. "As far as I'm concerned, I hope this relationship works," Councilman Brad White said. "We don't want a problem." Don Hartle, city manager, said Wellsville had some problems with odors from the facility under previous ownership. Bigelow told the council there is no relationship with the old company, and that the new business partners purchased the assets from the previous owner. He said measures were being taken to conform to the city ordinances. "We don't intend to ever have a problem," Bigelow said. "That's great, because we're not going to let you," Mayor Ruth P. Maughan said.
