Lighting ceremony, songs and treats proposed as annual Christmas event in Mendon

By Hilary Ingoldsby

MENDON -- Residents may have a new city tradition to enjoy come Christmas time. Plans for an annual Christmas lighting of the town square were proposed to the City Council last week by the Mendon City Arts Council.

"I think Mendon has some awesome traditions and that a Christmas tradition would add to that," Arts Council board member Jeri Cheney said.

Cheney's idea is to raise a lighted star to the top of a pole in the square; when the star reaches the top the other Christmas lights on trees, fences and the gazebo would then turn on. The lighting would be followed by a few seasonal musical numbers, a sing-along and treats. Santa Claus will also be in attendance to greet the children. The whole program would take about an hour, Cheney said. It will take place on the first Monday in December.

Lights for the occasion will mostly be gathered by donations and citizens will have the opportunity to help decorate.

"We're going to ask families to come in and help decorate the trees," Cheney said.

The Christmas lights will be on throughout December from 6 to 9 p.m. and the council does not foresee any energy problems.

"I think the city can handle that," Mayor Sydney Larsen said.

The Arts Council would like to see the tradition grow and over the next few years see a nice city nativity scene constructed as well as a child-size Christmas village. Cheney sees the construction of the manger scene and Christmas village as great opportunities for local people to get involved in the community.

"I'd like to see some local artists come out for this and it would make some great Eagle Scout projects," Cheney said.

"We have a ton of Scouts looking for projects," Councilwoman Tamera Jensen said.

Mayor Larsen asked the Arts Council to present a budget for what resources they need and then to get started on the plans.

"To see a Christmas tradition in this town revived I think would be great," Councilwoman Leslie Larson said.

"I think it's a great way to bring the community together," Cheney said.
