Battle of the Bands boasts great lights, sound, venue . . . and music By
Steve Barfuss Close to 400 people gathered to the ballroom in the Taggart Student Center at Utah State University Nov. 7 to view seven bands from the Wasatch Front battle it out and see who was the best. Day of Less, a band from Davis County, was announced the champions by the panel of judges. The bass guitarist from Day of Less, known only as Jon, said, "I would like to say thanks to everyone that came to the battle of the bands and supported us. I didn't think that we would win. "The organizers really put on a professional show and I think that is why they had the turnout that they did." Denise Savello, one of the event organizers from Students in Free Enterprise, said they expected more people but were happy with the support received. "This year compared to last year we had better sound, lighting and venue. I think this contributed to the growth in spectators this year," said Savello. When looking back on last year's event, Savello said this year's ran smoothly in comparison. She looks forward to planning the battle of the bands next year. Some changes Savello would like to institute: a broader range of rock music, a larger panel of judges and a one-cover song rule. Dolly Doty, a senior at USU and member of Students in Free Enterprise, would like to see battle of the bands be an all-day event. "There were a lot of good bands that we couldn't have play because of time constraints, and I think the bands should have the opportunity to play," said Doty. Doty felt they had attained some of their goals of organizing battle of the bands. "Our goal was to let Utah bands perform on a professional stage with professional lighting against high quality talent." Alma Cole, a sophomore at USU and guitarist for Jerry, said, "I enjoyed being on stage, with all the lighting and everything. I definitely didn't feel like I was playing in our garage." Doty expressing frustration at the music scene said there just aren't enough local events for bands to play, and there is so many that want to play. "With the amount of talent that there is in the Wasatch area there should be more opportunities for bands," said Savello.
