Citation issued for Halloween prank in Wellsville By
Melissa Dymock WELLSVILLE -- The joint efforts of the Wellsville Neighborhood Watch and the Cache County Sheriff's Office on Halloween resulted in one juvenile being cited for reckless burning. Sgt. Paul Todd of the sheriff's office said the juvenile lit a bale of straw on fire and dumped it out of the back of a truck on a Wellsville street on Halloween night. Todd said he and Deputy Troy Liquin pursued the individual and two other suspects through a couple of fields, but were unable to make an arrest until the next day. He said they gathered up information the next day through word of mouth about who the individuals were. "Kids talk," Todd said. The other two individuals have yet to be identified but the investigation is ongoing. "They were good kids just screwing around." Wellsville Councilman Kent Brenchley, the council's representative in the Neighborhood Watch, said the bale burning is sort of a tradition but it destroys part of the street. "It's just maliciousness," Brenchley said. Brenchley said Neighborhood Watch had been asked by the sheriff's office to simply use its eyes, and if members saw anything suspicious to call dispatch. He said they were asked to keep an eye out for suspicious individuals in a truck. "The Neighborhood Watch serves as a second or third pair of eyes for the sheriff's office," Brenchley said. Todd said there were five Neighborhood Watch members patrolling in cars, and Brenchley said 14 members volunteered to watch as they were out with their kids. Mrs. Glen Archibald, one of the volunteers, said she was impressed by the coverage from the sheriff's office. "I ran into them a few times in my route." Archibald said. "But from my viewpoint it was very quiet."
