Nibley electing mayor, two council members Tuesday

By Julie Sulunga

NIBLEY -- The mayor's job and two City Council seats will be up for grabs Tuesday in Nibley.

Mayor

Lynn Welker has lived in Nibley 20 years and has raised his family there. He has been on the city council for 12 years. His experience with city government began when he was on the student senate while attending Brigham Young University in Provo.

"I am most impressed with city government," Welker says. "If I am elected, I will quit my job and focus on being mayor." Giving back to the community by what he gained raising his children is why he got involved in city government, he says.

As far as growth goes in Nibley, Welker says it is inevitable. "I don't think that we need to mix duplexes with family dwellings. I am not for mixing the two."

Todd Hansen has been on the Nibley City Council for 12 years and worked on planning and zoning before that. "I thoroughly enjoy being involved in government," he says.

About multiple housing, "I don't want to see another Blackhawk like one of the housing projects they have in Logan," Hansen says. As for duplexes, "I don't know where they should go."

"I stem on growth, just as long as it is planned," he says.

Four-year city council seats

Debbie Lowry is the only incumbent running. She has served on the council for four years and planning and zoning before that for five years.

"One of the best qualities I have to bring to the table is the experience I have gained," Lowry says. "I am critical of decisions made. I also have new ideas to solve issues."

"As far as mixed-family dwellings go, I like the feel of Hyrum," she says. "They have everything all mixed up and integrated. You can't even tell which houses have multiple family dwellings in them except for the fact that there may be two mailboxes. I don't like the idea of segregating one section of the city for duplexes or multiple family dwellings."

Dori Peterson is the only write-in candidate vying for a seat in the council. "I am a representative of families with young elementary-aged children. I also want to represent more of the women's population in Nibley."

"I feel the main issue is growth especially rapid growth," Peterson says. "The City of Nibley needs to implement a massive plan of development. As far as mixed family dwellings go and duplexes, I don*t feel that I have enough information. I know I don*t want to segregate any one particular area for duplexes or multiple family dwellings."

Scott William Larsen has lived in Nibley for three years. "I live in Elkhorn (one of the new housing subdivisions). The reason why I am running is to give a representation of the middle-aged young group, which I feel is one of the fastest growing groups in Nibley.

"I don't want another Blackhawk," Larsen says. "It is nice but, I don't want that big of a development in Nibley. I like the clustering approach of having duplexes in small groups. As far as the multiple family dwellings, they can be integrated. You can*t even tell where they are located except for the two mailboxes or extra driveway."

Don Fuller has lived in Cache Valley all his life. He grew up in the north end of the valley. "I feel like I will be a benefit to the council because I am already friends with Todd, Lynn and Debbie," he says.

"I won't be a yes man," Fuller says. "I will be a team player.

"I don't like the idea of mixing duplexes in with the traditional housing. I feel it decreases the property value of the houses. I would like to see some grouping of the duplexes and segregate them from the rest of the housing."

Tom L. Waite has lived in Nibley for two years. "I feel like I will bring lifetime experience to the table. I have been in the Navy for 26 years. I taught at Missouri State and was department head there as well. I also teach at Utah State University once in a while," he says.

"There is pressing development going on all around us," Waite says. "The issue at hand is how we go about managing that development. I would like to see a form of clustering duplexes on a small level. I also don't think the duplexes should be mixed in with the housing. I don't want another Blackhawk like they have in Logan, in Nibley."
